In this post, you’ll learn what clear messaging means for your marketing strategy, why specificity drives connection (and conversions), and how to start sharpening your own message immediately.
Have you ever read a post on Threads or watched a reel on Instagram and felt an overwhelming sense that it was created just for you?
It likely wasn’t aggressive but rather a subtle inclination that the speaker understood your current position, your perspective, and maybe even some of your lived experiences.
The speaker effectively created a mirror, and you felt you were looking at yourself in their words. The experience likely felt illuminating, validating, and reassuring.
Messaging is the pulse behind every word that’s written. It’s the soul within the body [of text], giving purpose to the message, the slogan, and the sales pitch. It’s the reason you feel compelled to act.
The more dialled in your messaging becomes, the more quickly your readers will identify and move (aka invest, buy, click, convert).
Effective marketing content is driven by clear messaging motivating concise copy–
speaking to one specific person with one specific problem for which you have one specific solution.
The more specific you can get, the more magnetic what you’re saying becomes.
Focus your lens on this one person, then, tailor your message for them.
But this misconception couldn’t be further from the truth. In fact, I’d like to argue the opposition. When your message is specific, it attracts even more people, even when the message isn’t necessarily for them.
When you write and speak with conviction and purpose, it creates pull, intrigue, and interest. If your message has grit, teeth, and a point, it’s almost a guarantee you’re going to get the attention of people who just have to listen.
Another common misconception is that narrowing your focus equates to lost opportunity. But when you create a truly compelling piece of content, you will attract a diverse audience who connects with different aspects of your messaging.
The risk of casting too wide a net is that your message will fall flat entirely.
BROAD:
“I help you grow your online presence.”
SPECIFIC:
“You’ve posted 57 times this month and you still feel invisible. You don’t need to be posting more, you need to be posting smarter. You need content that turns silent scrollers into paying clients.”
Why this works:
It nails the frustration and points to a specific misunderstanding.
Solid messaging isn’t an afterthought. It’s the controlling force behind everything you hit send on:
Every strong piece of copy starts long before the writing begins — with a tight messaging foundation that clarifies exactly who you’re talking to and why they should care. That’s why certain brands are unmistakable, regardless of platform. Their messaging is uniform.
Messaging is the backbone of everything I write — and without this foundation, even the most eloquently written copy lacks driving force.
But with it– your words gain a pulse and your audience feels the difference.
A message for everyone is a message for no one.
Let that be your new mantra.
Just as we cannot expect everyone to like and understand us, we cannot expect a single piece of writing or content to resonate with everyone.
Get specific. Create something tailored for one person.
Become a master of juicy, magnetic messaging.
And watch your dream audience flock to you with piqued ears and primed to invest in your solutions.
